dc.descriptionCompared to a 'classical' condensed-matter or solid-state physics course (like, say, Phys 474), a student will get a broader overview of different material classes and develop a physical intuition with less emphasis on formal derivations. This course is intended to develop in the student a physical understanding of the fascinating properties of materials studied in science and used for every-day and technological applications. This is done primarily in three ways. (1) Learning basic concepts and quantities used to describe and classify the condensed state of matter. (2) Studying experimental methods to characterize its physical properties. (3) Understanding how these properties make a material suitable for particular applications. - grades breakdown
